Chapter 7 - Now here’s a thought. It’s amazing what a year out of corporate America has done for me and my perspective on health insurance. Here’s what I mean. When I had a job, (now I still have a job, but it really doesn’t seem like a
J-O-B) I always felt like I needed to have a ton of insurance. I was always concerned about someone at our house getting sick. I mean it was always something. Bronchitis, colds, headaches, rashes, funny itchy bumps, zits, stuff like that. But here’s the thing. Getting sick was convenient. And honestly, that was the most contagious thing about it.
But my mindset and my family’s has changed. I believe I am going to be healthy. I believe my family is going to be healthy. So now guess what? I’m still dumb as dirt. I am paying $873 per month for the privilege of a $20 co-payment (and I still have that $1,500 deductible). I’m sitting here saying to my self, “How could the cheapest man on earth be spending so much for so little?”
Let me get back to the mindset, because there’s more, and this is the important part. I now look at insurance as something I need when and if I get sick. If I don’t plan to be sick very often, why pay for it no matter what?? But if something really unexpected (and potentially expensive) happens in the sick department at our house, I want to make sure I have some help in working through it. That’s why High Deductible Health Plans with HSA’s make sense.
