Health Savings Accounts = Happy Savings Accounts

I was driving in my car a little while ago and heard on some radio program that June 20th is the "happiest day of the year."  A very pleasant idea indeed.  I'm also wondering if some dude or dudess got paid to figure that out?  Seriously, somebody did some study and got paid for it, to figure this out.  I think it was outside the U.S., so we can take some consolation that it was not paid for with our tax dollars.  Seems pretty low stress to me.  I wonder what they got paid and if I might be qualified to do that job?

Speaking of happiness, we're half way through the year and I'm wondering where folks are in terms of saving money into their Health Savings Account (HSA) this year?   If you've been putting $ away every month, good for you.  I'll bet your happiness quotient is fairly high today.  If you haven't and are able to go to the bank, and make a deposit today, that should drive your happiness quotient up today as well.  If you are a procrastinator, blow it off until tomorrow and then take that HSA deposit to the overnight drop box at your bank.  Of course they are open on Saturday and you can have the delayed gratification of a little more HSA Happiness tomorrow.

If you are one of those folks who takes satisfaction in measuring your HSA accomplishments vs. others', a Canopy Financial HSA Market Report came out today.  You can check it out to see how your savings compare to your fellow Americans tending to their health and happiness by contributing to their health savings account.

If you don't want to look, no problem, it's all about happiness today, but here are a couple of stats for you anyway.  The average account balance for an individual is around $700 and for a family around $1,400.  If you can jump over that bar, you may find a little HSA happiness there.   In fact, I'd recommend that if you can figure out how to do it, to try to get the amount in your HSA at least has high as your annual deductible.  That way if you have a day that is less than happy, at least your financial downside will be covered.

In closing, the report states health savings accounts are growing month over month, which makes me happy because it means that people are taking more control of their own healthcare.  It's CDHC (consumer driven healthcare at work).

happy face

Cheers to all of you HSA savers out there!  Be happy, you deserve it.
