Dirty Little Secrets

Your insurance broker may have told you this, but then again, he or she may not have. If they are resistant to selling you high deductible health plans (HDHPs), it may be because they don’t make as much money from them as traditional insurance plans.

You see, as a rule, they are paid from the premium you pay on that plan. So if you pay $500 per month in premium today, and you move to a high deductible health plan at say $250 in premium per month, their commission gets chopped.

The growth of HDHPs and HSAs has varied throughout the country with some states faster adopters than others.

Know your agent. Ask questions. Avoid the temptation to respond like a trained monkey. And remember, YOU ARE THE BOSS IN CONSUMER DIRECTED HEALTH!
