Not to be a buzz kill....but you can't reimburse Canadian scripts through your HSA. Only drugs that are legally imported are ok. It's an IRS thing.

This is very sad. I'm not familiar with what would consititute "legal importation" Can any light be shed on that? I guess another question would be how would one analyze the trade offs of saving $ versus the reimbursment through the HSA.

AChambers, can you check out www.healthpricer.com? They have created a great site that comparison shops both US and Canadian drugs. The Canadian stores from which one can get a prescription filled seem to be completely legit and legal. Does this mean that it will be o.k. to reimburse yourself out of your HSA? It seems counterintuitive in the world of competition for health care dollars not to be able to get the best pricing from our neighbors above us.

Great question!

What else do we spend money on that very few people even have a clue what the cost is?

NOTHING!

Our health care system has operated for years with people paying rediculous prices without asking the same question you just asked. Once people start spending their own money out of their HSA, competition will reduce prices dramatically.

Try www.Costco.com under pharmacy. You don't have to be a member to fill your prescriptions there.

Good luck!
